ABOUT THE Y
PURPOSE
The YMCA is for Everyone
The
YMCA has been making a contribution to the lives of people all over
the world since 1844. In Canada, we have been around for 152 years.
We established the YMCA in Fort McMurray serving the region since
1974. We will be celebrating our 30th anniversary in the year 2005.
The YMCA of Wood Buffalo is a multi-service centre, a health fitness
and recreation facility. We have child care centers, three in fact,
a youth drop in centre, a safe haven for new immigrants to Canada.
Few people can cite all the things the YMCA does or has done. What
they do know is that:
- The YMCA is there for them through every stage of life and its
ups and downs.
- YMCA programs get results.
- Any program created or adapted by the YMCA carries its charitable
purpose and values.
- A board of community-minded citizens oversees how the YMCAs
Assets are used to advance its mission.
A YMCA and its programs promote:
- A global perspective awareness of our interdependence
and a desire to work for justice and peace
- Holistic health understand that health is more than the
absence of illness, that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound
of cure
- Philanthropy and volunteerism ways to serve oneself an
others, to participate in building a better community for everyone
- Values caring, honest, respectful, and responsive behavior
towards all living things.
Today, the YMCA is particularly concerned about:
- Opportunities for children and youth in the non-school hours
- Quality child care and other supports for working parents
- The employment prospects for youth
- The health and fitness of Canadians
- The living conditions in underdeveloped countries
In Fort McMurray these concerns have mobilized the YMCA in the
following ways:
- We have programs for after school and Saturdays for youth, we
also offer OUT OF SCHOOL CARE for 104 children everyday
- We provide 95% of all licensed child care in Fort McMurray in
partnership with Syncrude, Suncor, Keyano and the Fort McMurray
Public School District
- We prepared 9300 youths aged 15 24 in 2002 in job search,
interview skills technique, safety training through our Youth
Connections office
- We have 5000 members at our Health Fitness and Recreation facility
adjoining the Westwood Community High School
- In partnership with the YMCA of Alberta we exchange human, financial
and technical resources with the YMCA of Bogotá Colombia
