YMCA Events / YMCA World Peace Week 2008

YMCA Peace Week is unique to Canada. It originated in 1984 when YMCA Canada decided to add an entire week of peace related activities to follow Peace Day. For that reason, the week is eight days long, running from the third to fourth Saturday in November. During the week associations across Canada promote activities and educational programs to help people explore peace from a personal, community, and international perspective.

The YMCA Peace Medallion is intended to recognize the achievements of individuals and groups in local communities who—without any special resources--demonstrate in their lives and activities the values expressed in the World Alliance of YMCAs' 1981 Statement of Peace, which states (in part):

Peace Ribbon“Peace has many dimensions. It is not only a state of relationships among nations. We cannot expect to live in a world of peace if we are unable to live in peace with those close to us—even those who differ from us.
“The responsibility for peace begins with each person, in relationship with family and friends, and extends to community life and national activities...”

Through her tireless work fostering the growth and development of this communities children, this year's nominated and chosen recipient of the World Peace Week Medallion is Hope Moffat. Congratulations Hope and Thank You for all you do for our community!
